Alas, my computer after 7 hard years has finally come to the point where It just can't keep up with today's high end games. So I am in need of an upgrade. Quick rundown on my current rig:

1st Gen Core i7 @ 2.5ghz
8GB DDR3 ram
160GB Corsair SSD hard drive
300GB Velicorapter HD
Nvidia GTX 470 OC
Zalman 850W PSU
Cooler Master HAF Full tower

Now I was hoping to just swap out the CPU and video card, but I have found that I am very much out of date on everything. Now a days I have no clue what is actually good vs crap. So any input on a build would be most welcome. The computer itself would be pretty much a gaming rig. Money wise I would like to stay UNDER 1500 total, I do realize that building a gaming rig that is going to last 3-6 years will require some $$$$$ spent so although I'm not wanting to spend more then $1500 I can go above that. Here is what I have come up with so far. Don't know what is compatible or what not or what is even good. So any advice please PLEASE let me know thank you!

MOBO:

CPU:

Hard Drive(Primary)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820228125

Memory:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820233332

Video Card:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814487079

CPU Cooler:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 68V21E0640

Any input as far as brands or products please share. I'm blindly diving into this build, thank you!

so here is my list for you

cpu

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819117561

mobo

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813128838

ram

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820231878

SSD

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... gnorebbr=1

COOLER

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6835103099

video card

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814487088

sound card

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... gnorebbr=1

total price $1220 vs the $1373 on your list, with my list you get a much better mobo , the latest intel chip( skylake) and being this computer is mainly gaming you only need a true quad core ,the ram you are getting DDR4 instead of DDR3, a dedicated sound card which is always better and for the SSD samsung and intel's tend to be the best so I opted for the Samsung that is slightly bigger . the cpu cooler that I selected will work just as good but is much quiter

now with out knowing the exact specs of the PSU I cant says for sure if it is worth getting a new power supply or not

now for the big difference, the video card, I never recommend the most powerful card out unless you got money burning a hole in your pocket, I always suggest going mid to mid/high end cards as the are new models always coming out every 6-12 months and is the once thing that is most often upgrade in a computer as the new gen mid level vid card will most often out perform the current high end card

thank you both for your great suggestions and advice. They helped a lot, I do have another question. What is the preformance difference between the i5 vs the i7. I did notice the increase in memory in the L3 cache, along with an increase of 500mhz on the processor speed. But is the difference that much noticable. Is it worth the extra $100 to spend initially to get the extra 500mhz along with the other goodies? Thank you

the difference is both have 4 physical cores but the i7 has 4 virtual core to which combined with the 4 physical core is like 8 cores , the i7 is better for those who do a lot more multi tasking or power users that use multi thread apps. if this computer is mainly for gaming and watch videos or playing music there will be little to no difference

To avoid starting a nother thread, what about a build in the $500-600 range? I have an 8 year old desktop I need to replace.

CD ROM I can carry over, and all peripherals. I could probably bring along a power supply (I'll post which one I have later and you can tell me if it's worth moving).

I always run my build ideas against Matrix's recommendations to see if I'm right lol

Hey Matrix I was looking at this, curious what you think. I'll only be running Squad or Chivalry and people seem to have similar builds:

I7-6700 Skylake 3.4GHz $349 LGA 1151

GIGABYTE GA-B150M-D3H-GSM LGA 1151 $86

G-SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2x8) F4-2133C15D-16GVR $84

EVGA GeForce GTX 960 02G-P4-2966-KR 2GB $209

Reusing the 680W psu since these new CPUs are such low power, case, monitor, hdd and OS so it looks like i can escape from this for less than $900 even if i went up on the MB or GPU.

like everything except the cpu and mobo combo, min requirments for that game are as follows

OS: Windows XP
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz or AMD Athlon X2 2.7 GHz (a dual-core CPU is required)
Memory: 2 GB RAM
Graphics: ATI Radeon 3870 or higher, Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT or higher. 512MB VRAM.
DirectX®: 9.0c
Hard Drive: 7 GB HD space
Other Requirements: Broadband Internet connection
Supported controls:: Keyboard + Mouse, or Xbox 360 controller, Xbox One controller, or compatible XInput

so it would be like using a engine from a lambo and sticking in sentra to use as a commuter car.I have always been a firm beliver in a strong base ie the PSU and mobo and then build up.

i would take the savings and go with an i5 skylake and put the extra money into a little better board as game are not realy pushing multi core cpu beyond 4 cores yet as they are more dependent on the ram and video card. just to give you an idea here is my build that I still have from 2.5 years ago and I still run most games at max setting like battle front with my video card being the weak point

I have ALWAYS read what Matrix states as my baseline and go from there...meaning I then balance it against the brands I prefer such as an ASUS Mobo.

exactly, I usually stick pretty close to what Matrix advises. Been happy with my choices I made. Well technically Matrix made lol.

So I know this is the time of the year for most to start looking at building a new Rig between now and Tax returns, for those who are looking to do so I would not get the new Kaby Lake from Intel as they is little to no performance gain over the previous Sky lake line up that has been out the last year and w is pricey, however there is some good news from what I have been seeing from AMD and their new ZEN processor that is due out in January and will be in 6 and 8 core configuration is as fast as the Sky lake and at like half the cost . so if you do upgrade stick with the current Sky lake or go with AMD ZEN and your wallet will thank you
