Why?

Mon Sep 13, 2010 3:15 pm

I was playing on a server the other night (not ours, I was playing DOD Source  ), but a discussion was brought up for taking a Console (PS3 or 360) and make it into a PC. I just kept asking "why" would anybody want to do this? I jut don't see any advantage to doign this and the dipsticks on the server would not answer my question.. SO I figured I would ask here.

Personally, I see no benefit, but maybe I'm not thinking about it hard enough. I mean, once you load the bloatware OS of XP or Windows 7 (if they can even run Windows 7) then there is no benefit I can see..

it's cool

a lot of people run linux on their consoles when they do that so less of a hit to the hardware

Didn't the Air Force use a bunch of PS3s as a Linux cluster?

:)

thats certainly part of it. some people just like to tinker with stuff. the other part though is usually so you can have a media center pc attached to your TV/stereo system that isn't in a bulky pc case.

For Linux, I guess it makes sense, but as a PC (running the more traditional home applications) it sure sounds like it would be a dog...

What I got out of this thread is a question... :eh:
WTH is the Air Force going to do with 2000 PS3's?
