You'd vomit if you knew how many drops I already get every week. Double drops is going to be great! Hopefully I'll get one of the newer hats!

If Valve wants a real promo though, they should do key drop week, where all your drops are keys.

wtf is a drop cap?

Short version: the item drop cap is 14 items per week.

Longer version:
A long time ago, even before trading, there was no drop cap. Remember how you could idle for hats? Join an idle server and as long as you didn't leave, you'd just get item drops forever. Well Valve changed the way that worked a while back. Instead of just randomly getting items, you'd get a guaranteed minimum amount: between 6-14 items a week. They capped it so that even if you sat in an idle server all week, you couldn't get more than 14. This stopped a lot of idlers who would otherwise hope to cheat the system.

That doesn't mean idling doesn't exist. With a cap of 14 items a week, people started buying up more TF2 accounts, especially when they went on sale. They run that account for a few hours and they'd hit the cap, guaranteeing them 6=14 items, in addition to their main TF2 account. Some folks have multiple idling accounts. A lot of MMOs do this as well, where they can't beat the cheaters/exploiters, so they make money off them. Valve makes money off each TF2 account sold, and it adds to the number of players playing TF2. The cap doesn't hurt the regular joe who wants to play TF2, but it limits the guy who wants to sit idling 24/7 that used to get 80 drops a week. Note: no where is there official word that the limit is 14 items per week. I just know this from experience, lots and lots of experience. Double drop week makes it around 28 items maximum, and so far, I'm seeing item drops in this number range.

If you're wondering how the drop system works or how it used to work, the wiki explains it all:
http://www.tf2wiki.net/wiki/Item_drop_system

The drop cap resets every Wednesday at 5pm PST. In case you're thinking this is too complicated for TF2 or any FPS, you don't need to know any of this to enjoy the game; but there it is if you were curious.
