You jerks better be there tonight!!

And, if you have crate #40 or 42, I'll open it for you, for FREE! If it's an unusual, you keep it! I only keep the other stuff!

BEST DEAL EVER NOT A PONZI SCHEME

(or I can just give you 2 scraps for the crate, you non-trader you)

I likely have some, though I have been deleting them a lot lately at random without paying attention to the number.

Valve should give the option to combine like 20 crates into a low damage melee weapon made of wood. Call it "The Survivalist" or something.

I'll be there tonight suckas. I might have one of those crates Gel, lemme see. Hopefully on opening it doesn't turn out to be another crate...

Re: Friday Night Fights!!!

What most people don't understand about the crates, especially new ones, is that opening them pays for the cost of the key, due to trading. Not everyone wants to bother trading, though, so it's easy to just delete them. Not all the crates are great either; some contain cheap items, and some contain items worth at least a key each.

I enjoy the little dice roll game when there is little to no investment. :P It's easy to pawn the contents of the crate and receive more keys in return. :D

Hehe, people just use PayPal to sell their keys/hats, but we're not talking about making money here (most have real jobs for that), rather that opening crates (with some thought involved) doesn't have to cost you anything except a little ingenuity and a small time investment (minutes, not hours).

Although often requested by folks who don't open crates, the idea that you should be able to craft crates into something else is not financially sensible to Valve. Crates give them a constant stream of revenue. You might argue that the ones you get don't add to Valve's revenue because you delete them all, but there are a couple reasons why this is either untrue, or at best, true but nothing changes.

Most extreme cases:
A) If every person who didn't want a crate deleted it, then Valve would make no money from those people, but they'd continue making money from people who open crates.
B) If crates were craftable into something that doesn't really benefit Valve financially, e.g. a silly weapon, a crummy hat, small amount of metal, then the people who don't want to open crates would all craft them into whatever that is, scrap. This also removes the crates from those who want to open them, that is, they can only open the ones they received as drops or from other traders. So far, this is similar to situation A. However, you can imagine some of the people who open crates would also be interested in crafting some of their crates into scrap, or whatever crappy item comes from crafting them. This removes more potential revenue from Valve.

In order to make sure crates are always in supply, Valve gives about 2 per week to someone who has played at least 6 hours that week, but never more than 2 unless they didn't play at all the week before (there is a little roll over in the system). There are quite a few people who open more than 2 crates a week, though. Without other people not wanting to get rid of their crates, the uncraters wouldn't be able to open many crates, thereby losing a lot of potential revenue for Valve.

The bottom line is: giving players a crafting recipe for crates is a bad idea financially, for Valve. That is, unless they make the item into another financially enticing item. Valve needs to keep the crates in existence, and leave you the sole option of deleting it or trading it away as your only outs.

That being said, I have a deal for you. Let's open all my crates. I will buy a key or two and open a couple crates. You can then take said contents of the crate and trade for whatever you can get for them. We can use the additional keys to keep opening crates. When a crate is opened, we will alternate who decides whether we keep the contents an subsequently keeps the contents or trade. I will start, then you, etc. So one of us either keeps the contents or use to trade for keys and open more crates. I have about 60 crates.

So I supply the crates and the initial start up fee, you provide the trading knowledge, we split the proceeds with some "dice roll game" as to whether which of us gets something unusual. What say you? :)

It's a fun proposition, except 4 days have now passed since the new crates have come around. The initial values of the crate contents have dropped a lot, although half the items are still worth 1 key (imagine a parabolic curve for the inverse of X, starts high, goes down fast). Of those 60 crates you mentioned, how many of them are the new crate 40-42? These are new, and the most lucrative crates to open. That was the main point of the first half of my post; that the new crates are the best to open, so everyone give me your new crates and you can have the unusuals if they contain one (the other half of my post being about why crafting crates away is not a good idea for Valve).

So I say, "pass" on the idea because the contents of most of your crates are not worth keys; they are barely worth a reclaimed or two. If we had a dozen new crates (or crate #30), I'd totally go for it though. Pick and choose the best/newest crates to open and open them early. After that, sell off the rest of your crates in bulk (I traded 12 crates the other day to a pub on RH for some strange weapons) because you may not want them, but they are worth something to someone else. We all have bulk crates to get rid of. :D
