We are just over a week away from the start of the 2014 Formula 1 season!

This season’s formula has the most dramatic change in the history of Formula 1.
  • Gone are the screaming V8 engines and in are super complicated turbocharged V6 engines.
  • Gone are two exhaust ports and in is a single exhaust port out the back.
  • Gone are full length front wings and in are shorter front wings to reduce the down force.
  • Gone are the high front noses and in…well we are going to get to that in a bit.

To explain that in a fun and quick way watch the video below:

As for the cars a lot of the noses look like this thread should be in the adult swim section: http://motorsportsunplugged.com/f1/the-cars-of-2014-f1-pictures/

Finally, the first race of the season is again Melbourne, Australia at Albert Park. There will be 58 laps around the 5.303 km circuit and it is highly likely many of the competitors will not finish.
Breakdown for US watching on TV:
Countdown to F1 – Thursday, March 13, 9 p.m. ET (NBCSN)
Practice 1 – Thursday, March 13, 9:30 p.m. ET (Live on NBCSN and NBC Sports Live Extra)
Road to Ferrari – Thursday, March 13, 11 p.m. ET (NBCSN)
Practice 2 – Friday, March 14, 1:30 a.m. ET (Live on NBCSN and NBC Sports Live Extra)
Qualifying – Saturday, March 15, 2 a.m. ET (Live on NBCSN and NBC Sports Live Extra)
Qualifying Encore – Saturday, March 15, 6 a.m. ET (NBCSN)
Grand Prix – Sunday, March 16, 1:30 a.m. ET (Live on NBCSN and NBC Sports Live Extra)
F1 Extra – Sunday, March 16, 4 a.m. ET (Live on NBCSN and NBC Sports Live Extra)
Grand Prix Encore – Sunday, March 16, 6:30 a.m. ET (NBCSN)

For the pinnacle of motorsport do you feel F1 cars should be using such small engines or do you think they should have stuck with the V8 engines or go way back and use those V10 or V12 engines?

The first Formula 1 race of the season is over and done with and brought some crazy storylines. Both Lewis Hamilton (the favorite for the race and pole sitter) and Sebastian Vettel retired with engine problems. Kevin Magnussen's first Formula 1 start had him finish in third 3rd place....the same as Lewis Hamilton in his first F1 start. The second place finisher, Daniel Ricciardo, became the first Australian racing driver to stand upon the podium at the Australian GP. But hours later he was disqualified when the race stewards determined that at multiple times during the race his Red Bull Racing car exceeded the fuel flow rate according to the 2014 formula. Additionally, both Lotus drivers failed to finish the race due to problems with their cars. Finally, Valtteri Botta had a bloody good drive. A race edit of the Australian GP is below:

The next race is the PETRONAS Malaysia Grand Prix from March 28th - March 30th. Look for better reliability from a majority of the cars and a lot more passing. I plan on going into more detail around the track within the next few days.

A few questions for all of you Renegade Heroes, did you watch the race? If so, what did you think of the cars and the racing? If you did not watch the race, why? And what would get you to watch a Formula 1 race?

Watched it. Enjoyed it. I did not hear about the disqual though .. bummer. Some odd new rules, especially with the fuel ratio limit and the tires where they had to use a couple different types, but possibly even more depending on weather.

really creating lots of opportunities for an innocent screw up leading to DQ.

Hello everyone, sorry for not updating this thread in a long time, but just wanted to give an update about an incident that occurred during the Japanese Grand Prix.

Marussia driver Jules Bianchi unfortunately had a horrible crash on lap 42 of the Japanese Grand Prix in which he ran into the back of a recovery crane attempting to recover another crashed car (Adrian Sutil's Sauber F1 car). The crash was severe causing 'diffuse axonal injury', after undergoing surgery he is currently in the ICU. Hopefully, Jules will fully recover and get back to racing soon.

Formula 1 post race and post surgery comments below:

FIA post-race statement wrote:
"On lap 42, Adrian Sutil lost control of his car, spun and hit the tyre barrier on the outside of Turn 7. The marshals displayed double waved yellow flags before the corner to warn drivers of the incident. A recovery vehicle was dispatched in order to lift the car and take it to a place of safety behind the guard rail. While this was being done the driver of car 17, Jules Bianchi, lost control of his car, travelled across the run-off area and hit the back of the tractor.

"Once the marshals reported that the driver was injured, medical teams were dispatched and the safety car was deployed. These were followed by an extrication team and an ambulance. The driver was removed from the car, taken to the circuit medical centre and then by ambulance to Mie General Hospital.

"The CT scan shows that he has suffered a severe head injury and he is currently undergoing surgery. Following this he will be moved to intensive care where he will be monitored.

"Mie General Hospital will issue an update as soon as further information becomes available."

Marussia driver Jules Bianchi is in a critical but stable condition following surgery to treat the severe head injury he suffered in a serious accident in Sunday's 2014 Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by Bianchi’s family in conjunction with the Mie General Medical Center in Yokkaichi, the Frenchman suffered a 'diffuse axonal injury' (a type of brain trauma) and remains in intensive care.

“The medical professionals at the hospital are providing the very best treatment and care and we are grateful for everything they have done for Jules since his accident,” read the statement.

"This is a very difficult time for our family, but the messages of support and affection for Jules from all over the world have been a source of great comfort to us. We would like to express our sincere appreciation.

“We are also grateful for the presence of Professor Gerard Saillant, President of the FIA Medical Commission, and Professor Alessandro Frati, Neurosurgeon of the University of Rome La Sapienza, who has travelled to Japan at the request of Scuderia Ferrari. They arrived at the hospital today and met with the medical personnel responsible for Jules’ treatment, in order to be fully informed of his clinical status so that they are able to advise the family. Professors Saillant and Frati acknowledge the excellent care being provided by the Mie General Medical Center and would like to thank their Japanese colleagues.

“The hospital will continue to monitor and treat Jules and further medical updates will be provided when appropriate.”

This weekend is the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas just outside of Austin, Texas. Some interesting news has occurred over the last few days in that the two main back markers on the Formula 1 grid have gone into administration (aka they are bankrupt); Caterham and Marussia. As well, three other teams have posted losses this year between 20 and 80 million US dollars; Sauber, Force India and Lotus F1 Team.

With Caterham and Marussia it is very likely they will dissolve over the next few months meaning that all three teams that entered Formula 1 since the start of 2010 have been lost. Additionally, this will be the smallest starting grid for a Formula 1 grand prix since the 2005 Monaco Grand Prix. On one last sad note Marussia not attending the race means that America's own Alexander Rossi will fail to compete in a Formula 1 race this year :(

Those of you interested in watching the USGP this weekend may find Practices 1 - 3 on the NBC Sports Network and both qualifying and the race on NBC.
Friday:
Practice 1: 10:00 AM Central Standard Time
Practice 2: 2:00 PM Central Standard Time

Saturday:
Practice 3: 10:00 AM Central Standard Time
Qualifying: 1:00 PM Central Standard Time

Sunday:
Race: 2:00 PM Central Standard Time

If you have any questions about the race let me know and I will try to answer them for you!
