Howdy everyone, as of this post we are a little over 56 days until the start of the 2014 IndyCar Series season opener at St. Petersburg! I kind of dropped the ball last year on the IndyCar thread so this year I'm going to do a track overview for each track well before the season starts instead of being late every time.

Currently, IndyCar is probably my favorite series of racing to watch because the quality of the drivers and the cars are so close in terms of performance. In Formula 1 the cars are so aero dependent and the chasses so different that it is difficult to overtake, in the United SportsCar Championship I do not know who most of the drivers are so I can not figure out who to root for or against, and NASCAR is a completely different beast altogether.

Did anyone watch an IndyCar race last year? If you did, which one (or ones) did you watch and what did you think of them? Also, what do you want to know about this IndyCar season or past seasons (I will try to do some research to help answer any questions you have)? Hopefully, we can get some discussion this year closer to the political forum! Now lets get started with an overview of each track on this season's calendar!

[Edit]Just wanted to point out, the main reason for tables being added to the RH forum was for this thread! Thanks Ashman.[/Edit]

Race 1: Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg
Track Info:
The 1.8-mile, 14-turn circuit incorporates streets of downtown St. Petersbug and a section of runway of Albert Whitted Airport.
After the long front stretch, there’s a tight right-hander into Turn 1 and then a quick left-hand turn. Plenty of drivers have gotten into trouble in these two turns over the years. There are two other long straights with braking zones that afford opportunities to overtake.

The racing will feature a standing start and will run clockwise, the opposite of the Indianapolis 500, creating even more diverse competition during the month. Drivers will have at minimum four unique opportunities to pass, including the revised Turn 1, a 90-degree right hand corner, which drivers are already pronouncing as the best road course turn in the series.

Race 5: 98th Indianapolis 500-Mile Race
Track Info:
With four corners banked at 9 degrees, 12 minutes, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway drivers more like a road course than an oval. But each of the corners is different, with weather influencing the car’s characteristics. The straightaways are 5/8ths of a mile long – time to catch your breath and dive into the next corner.

Race 11: Pocono IndyCar 500 Fueled by Sunoco
Track Info:
Pocono Raceway is called the “Tricky Triangle” because of its unique design. Each turn is modeled after turns from three different racetracks. Turn One (14-degree banking) was modeled after the now defunct Trenton Speedway. Turn Two (9-degree banking) has characteristics of Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Turn Three (6-degree banking) is similar to The Milwaukee Mile.

Race 13 and 14: Honda Indy Toronto Race 1 and 2
Track Info:
The 11-turn, 1.75-mile circuit, which offers great views of downtown Toronto, is tight and has led to cars attempting to squeeze past each other in turns. Many times, only one makes it out unscathed. A long front stretch leading into the Turn 1 Princes Gate, a hard right-hander, is a great place for overtaking.

Track Info:
The one-mile oval drives more like a road course because of the 9-degree banking in the turns, which produces exciting racing. Drivers can’t go flat out on the course, which creates overtaking opportunities in the turns as well as the straights.
The Mile opened in 1903 and little has changed to the configuration.

Big news in the IndyCar series. Version announced today that they will become the title sponsor of the IndyCar series for the next ten years. The deal is rumored to be for $100 million dollars so expect to start seeing a lot more IndyCar ads on your TV. Now a question for everyone, should a series allow a team sponsor to also be a title sponsor?
