Rugby on DirecTV channel 490

Mon Jul 18, 2011 7:08 pm

Damn, who knew? Apparently I have a Rugby channel that shows live events. Watched Samoa beat Australia last weekend which seems to have been a big upset, this Thur/Fri there are a couple other battles being shown.

Learning more about the sport and watching everything I can. I still can't quite put my finger on why I enjoy it so much? I've actually looked online for match results (my dvr overwrote New Zealand v Australia last week). The only other sport I do that with is MMA. Not football and not hockey, even though I enjoy them too.

If you're interested, the matches are aired Fridays and Saturdays on channel 490 as noted above, and they're all live.

I used to play Rugby for an AF team (Rugby League) stationed at Yokota. I was the Winger (#5) on the right side of the field...main reason was I was the fastest player. Still love the sport and watch it every chance I get...and since I have been working out, even entertaining the idea of playing again...

...I know I have a bit of speed left...can still get infield hits in softball...even when hitting dribblers to the pitcher...

i played 1st 15 my whole school career- started in grade 4. Played against the all blacks (which was fun) and we were provincial champs a few times. I played prop, lock but mostly was blind side break forward - loved shutting guys down on the blindside (the sidelines side).
I can't watch football because of rugby- i find it too slow and all the pads don't make sense to me. glad you are getting hooked Carl.

Oh yeah, I'd say I'm getting hooked Zero ;) On the weekend when I get some new matches (tests?) to watch, sometimes I'll only watch one half of a match on Saturday...that way I have another half to watch on Sunday. Sucks when I don't have any more to watch, haha.

I think you're becoming hooked, and if you're needing a daily fix, then it's suggested that you find a better supplier... of rugby 24/7!!!

I went and watched some high school buddies of mine play our schools team. First time I've ever seen a jaw bone in real life. Would watch again. No idea how scoring works. And why do they kick it out of bounds purposely all the time?

5 to score a try (touchdown) 2 for the conversion. the whole idea is to get the ball downfield so when the ball goes out of bounds there's a line out which is like a face-off in hockey (equal chance at the ball again) hope this helps. saw my first shin bone playing rugby.

To the best of my knowledge:

When there's a penalty the awarded team has the option to 'kick for touch' if they don't want to kick for points instead. It would be the equivalent of a punt, accept that the kicking team maintains possession with a lineout where the ball crosses the sideline.

You'll notice that Rugby doesn't have any pansy running out of bounds by the team with the ball. Not too much 'running out the clock' either. Blocking is not allowed, so if you're small and quick you still need to be prepared to get smashed.

Scrums require teammates to bind shoulders with each other, and those players can't intentionally fall to the ground or pull an opponent to the ground during the scrum. In a way it's pretty cool as you get to see an all power formation in action. I imagine that's why they always mention the pack weights before the first few scrums, so we can see how much beef is packed on both sides. Sometimes you'll see a team try to wheel the formation around to get an offset of players to their benefit.

'Extra points' after a touchdown are usually not gimmees in Rugby, because the kick occurs back from the spot that the ball touched down. If you touched down way off near an sideline, the ball can go back as far you want it to go but has to stay the same lateral distance from center.

An interesting point I heard an American commentator make is that the coach does not have much to do with the game once it's begun. The players on the field have to figure it out, for better or for worse.

After really starting to grasp the rules, I start to see how different the sports of American Football and Rugby really are. The ball, field, and scoring are alike but a lot of things are really different.

I've been working a lot of hours and haven't been able to stream the matches I wanted to see from RWC. I'll see the final tomorrow afternoon (noon on NBC), but there were a few cool matches that I missed the last couple weeks. :?

First match of the Super Rugby season begins in, oh, a half-hour or so. Reminder, directv ch 490. The season extends into july with weekly games between clubs.

Three conferences in Super Rugby: South Africa, Australia, New Zealand.

I've really gotten hooked on Rugby, got my dad hooked too lol...to the point that i plan to devote waaaaay too much time to blogging about it once i can shake this silly job of mine ;)

If you get a chance to see some SA teams play, you gotta listen to the pbp guy Hugh Bladen. The guy is awesome, great voice, great delivery and good insight.

Check it out if you're interested, and i can probably answer most questions now if you have them ;)
