Would anyone be interested in a dedicated sports forum?

Sun Jun 05, 2011 8:58 pm

I know there is a fantasy football forum, along with the political forum, gaming forum, etc., but would anyone be interested in having one that is purely about sports. I personally think it would be nice to have a common area where people could talk about teams, individual players, interesting events or other interesting blurbs in the world of sports. I will place a poll for two weeks to give everyone a chance to put their thoughts down.

I guess an example thread would be of my experience watching the Champions League final match where Manchester United and Barcelona went up against each other. Just after half time a "tornado watch" occurred and our local Fox station decided to make the game sooo much better as you can see in the video below:

I think Al's intention was a general sports forum, not just for soccer :) Between the various college and professional sports, as well as athletes shooting themselves or just making general asses of themselves, I'm in favor of it.

Regardless, everyone knows the Packers are the best football team on the planet. :P

As to what the forum would be I was thinking ofa general sports forum, like Shaddoch said. It could be anything from Football to Cricket to Wife Carrying to even Zorbing. And or general sports stories like being released from jail for shooting yourself in the foot, an old man that wears number 4 saying he is going to retire and then two minutes before a season starts saying I'm coming back, or how the Milwaukee Bucks are still going to win the NBA championship this year.

Anyone here like Rugby? I watched it from Thailand and enjoyed it, but it's really tough to get broadcasts here in the states. I caught some on tv last week but it was college-level and watered down. I hear BBC America televised a few pro matches months ago :(

Ugh, soccer. My mom tried to tell me she liked it at the last world cup, so I challenged her to actually sit down and watch a full match. Didn't happen.

I like the idea of a sports forum Al.

Universal Sports was broadcasting some Rugby recently.

You should stop watching Italian League soccer then. lol

There needs to be more televised track meets.

Who's got Miami winning tonight?

I sure do! I should be rooting for the ONLY team that has had 3/5 WHITE BOYS starting a NBA finals game in the past couple decades!! I think the last Champions were Bird's Celtics. Though I am a huge Lebron, and Wade fan! So I gotta go with them, and their defense is amazing.. Nobody can guard dirk though, that's proven... He'll have a 30pt game again I feel. (No I am not racist, it is just the facts that African American's have dominated the NBA since the 70s.)

It's the best and up and coming Sport the world has ever seen! Nothing has ever progressed in such a short time to be a multiple billion dollar industry!

I realize that this is a big question to the non believers. So I won't rage about it.. lol.

Try getting into a gym and see how difficult it is, and fun!

If you're asking is UFC is a sport, that'd have to be a no.. But they basically are; since they bought every national company, just not the regional.

For the record, the sport is MMA (mixed martial arts). The UFC is just an organization that puts on the fights.

You like MMA Gel? :?: I've been watching it for years.

LOVE MMA! Also love showing friends who practice MMA how MMA differs from what works on the streets...too fun!

Besides Universal Sports (which is premium for me so I don't have it), where else are you guys watching Rugby?

There's a lot of decent free or almost-free MMA on nowadays if anyone's interested (not in order of precedence):

1) Bellator: MTV2, I think next tournament starts at the end of the month. It will broadcast every Saturday night when in season. I am very pleased with Bellator, I just wish they'd move to the HD channel (they use HD equipment but don't broadcast in HD). They should also get rid of the HW tourney.

2) StrikeForce: On Showtime every few months with a great card coming up this weekend. SF is now owned by the UFC and they've been consistently putting on some great shows. Definitely check it out if you have Showtime and are interested.

3) HDNet: Every Friday night (typically) HDNet broadcasts live from some of the smaller shows. Occasionally they show Dream, a Japanese org with bigger name fighters, but JMMA is struggling to survive at the moment. HDNet also televises K1 kickboxing and features solid interviews with various MMA personalities (show is called Fighting Words with Mike Straka). It's always fascinating for me to hear what these guys have to say considering what they do for a living.

4) SpikeTV / Versus: Both channels feature live Ultimate Fight Night cards. These shows are put on by the UFC every 3 months or so and are usually pretty decent, though you won't typically see the primo UFC fighters here (the prime cuts are reserved for the PPVs). Also, each PPV, Spike shows at least two preliminary fights for free and those are usually pretty good. Time permitting, they'll show more than two.

5) Facebook: The UFC is now broadcasting the remaining prelims on Facebook (those not shown on Spike). All you have to do is 'like' the UFC, then show up around 3:15pm on fight day and stream away.

If all else fails, check www.MMAWeekly.com and look at the 'rumors' tab for upcoming fights. Or just pm me and I'll let you know what's coming up. I'll also let you know if I think it'll be boring or not based on my previous viewing experience; there are certain fighters that are lay-and-pray artists, Antonio McKee being the first name that comes to mind lol.

Not sure how many of you watched the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix last Sunday on Fox, but it was the most exciting race I have seen in a long long time. I found a video of the last six laps of the race (which is posted below) which shows how exciting the race was:

Fox Soccer + has also had some Rugby on though rarely, but that is also premium.
