Woodworking!!!

Tue Jul 09, 2013 8:37 pm

Decided to surprise my wife by building her a bench out of 2x4s and 2x8s to replace her cheapo plastic bench she sits on in the morning when she is sipping her coffee. She and the boys are currently on vacation, they went camping in Oregon near Bend and went to Crater Lake, then Reno to visit my Aunt/Uncle and see Lake Tahoe again, then on to AZ to visit one of her best Girlfriends. Then on way back they went to see the Pawn store for Pawn Stars and the place where they film American Restorations.

This bench took me 5 days so far, and I have tomorrow left to sand a bit, filled the drill holes with wood filler and need to sand, then will spray the whole bench down with sealant. Should get it done tomorrow evening after I get home from work.

Pretty sure she will like it...she'll be back on Thursday evening...can't wait for her to see it.

Looks good Jinx ! The only comment I would have is if you have a router, I would put a little 1/4" round or perhaps 1/2" on the top edge of that tabletop between the chairs. Or sand it hard so you wont catch the sleeves of a sweater / jacket on it. Very minor potential, but less chance of minor splintering too.

That is a good idea...Think I will have to do that...

bookmarking so I can peep it later...images blocked at work.

In the not-too-distant future I'd love to be doing this sort of thing as a hobby. There's literally nobody in my family that is handy, so everything I learn about woodworking (or any other handyman thing) has to be found through internet searches :(

Watch. New Yankee Workshop. There is also one on PBS where he only uses hand tools, have to come up with the name.

Took woodshop for 2.5 years in HS...got to the point where we were allowed to contract our services out. I made 7 china cabinets and several sets of stairs.
I can now pretty much look at ANYTHING made out of wood and make it...I am not the best, but getting better all the time as I do NOT do it as often as I want to.
Another good idea is to take a basic woodworking course at a local community center or community college. Look around...it is good to learn the tools under good instruction.
Also, if you do find a course, make sure they will make something you would WANT to make...

I've seen that show before Fubar, and I think I've seen the other one too. I[ve even watched a tool infomercial simply because they had some tips lol.

That's actually part of the plan Jinx, my local community college offers a carpentry class that I'm looking forward to taking. Just need time which I don't have now, but will have in the future. Hopefully soon!

I will say that I was able to successfully build two gates for my backyard, with side posts mounted to a pre-existing cinder block wall. It took me hours to figure out how to search online for this as I didn't know any of the terminology. The first hurdle was actually learning that my perimeter wall is 'cinder block' and not 'brick'
