Has anyone tried one of these obstacle course race type events?
I've looked at Tough Mudder and Warrior Dash, and the latter seems to be not as intense, and possibly a good place to start, plus its much cheaper ($125 for Tough Mudder vs. $65 for Warrior Dash).

While I haven't personally done one I have tons of buddies who have done both. I'm potentially doing one in NY in August with my cousins as one of them is wrecking her wedding dress, depends if my foot will hold together till then.
We used to have a poor mans version of one out in the woods behind our High School that we made years ago when we should have been practicing. Administration probably still has no idea it is there or how many people got hurt there.

The only obstacle course I've been through is the one at Fort Knox, Kentucky. You can see it featured, along with the barracks where I lived, in the move "Stripes".
