With video card prices these days is it still better to build your own or get a pre-built rig? My current machine (Dell) has been all-purpose workhorse and gaming for 7+ years, but I'm running into too many bottlenecks at various parts to try to replace/upgrade (4GB limit due to OS, can't replace motherboard due to box, etc.)

Budget would be $1-1.5k, and machine would be used in the same way as this one - Word, Excel, Google drive, browsing and gaming (RPGs mostly - Diablo 3, etc.).

Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

with pre builds you are limited to what and how much you can upgrade and this is on top of the avg life span of a computer which is about 3 years before it fails or outdated and in your case you got your money worth on your current rig lasting 7 years but for $1500 you can get a real good computer that will last but also give you room to upgrade. and I would go with the AMD ZEN cpu's as its more bang for your buck.

this is the rig I built last may and I run everything at ultra setting for the most part

G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB
CORSAIR HXi Series HX850i 850W 80 PLUS PLATINUM
SAMSUNG 960 EVO M.2 500GB NVMe PCI-Express 3.0 x4 Internal Solid State Drive
Logitech G502 Proteus Spectrum RGB Tunable Gaming Mouse
ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero AM4 AMD X370 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1
CM Storm Trooper - Gaming Full Tower Computer
ASUS 24X DVD Burner
AMD RYZEN 5 1600X 6-Core 3.6 GHz
Windows 10 Home - 64-bit - OEM
MasterLiquid 240 All-in-one CPU Liquid Cooler with Dual Chamber Pump by Cooler Master
EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB SSC GAMING ACX 3.0, 6GB GDDR5

in all i spent $1700 back in may and is most likely can be done cheaper for the same parts at todays prices or save even more with different models but I would highly recommend a AMD build and with at least 16 gigs or more ram

Thanks, Matrix. That prices out to about $1600 through Amazon and New Egg. I'm not sure I want to venture into liquid cooling, but I'll take a look at other parts using this (and the AMD recommendation) as a base.

as for the liquid cooling I was going for a quitter and cleaner look as the all in one liquid coolers have come down in price and not much more than a high end after market air cooler. her is a picture of my back up computer using same case and cooler but is a Intel I5 build and the look is similar to my current one.

What's maintenance for the all-in-one liquid cooling like?

that one has been going for over 4 years now and I just blow the dust out of the Rad when I do routine cleaning.
