Okay, so I figured out this PLEX thing and would be happy to explain in detail to others. Here's the short version:

Plex is a FREE media server application (Linux/PC/Mac). It gathers your media and streams it anywhere on your network via AppleTV, Roku (both of which have free PLEX channels), web interface, smart tv and to your mobile devices (ipad app is $4.99 but worth it).

But wait, there's more. With an account (even the free version) you can stream the media from your media server anywhere in the world there is an internet connection (i've watched movies on my 3g iphone connection streaming from my home media server).

But that's not all! In addition to your media, plex has installable channels (also free) that include NBC, CBS, ABC, PBS, HGTV, History, A&E and dedciated Colbert and Daily show channels. These channels allow you to watch full episodes of CURRENT seasons of shows.

Again, this is 100% free. with the paid account ($4 a month or $75 life time) you can issue passwords to other users who can share your media library and stream your stuff to their homes.

Thanks for the info! I've used TVersity and Orb.

I mainly used TVersity to stream things from my PC to the PS3 -- I've since upgraded to a PS4 and the thing doesn't support media streaming to it :x

I'll check out Plex for possible a on-the-go solution!

Two main uses for me:

stream from computer to TV (via Roku).

stream to my portable devices (iPhone and iPad app for it).

the media server tracks my (dynamic IP) and always connects, streaming exactly like Netflix (with a similar interface, actually)
