Help for a friend

Fri Oct 05, 2012 7:14 am

A friend of mine posted this on FB, so thought I'd reach out to the smartest computer folks I know. Any thoughts on his 1) question and 2) his parts?

I'm building a new Desktop and I have a choice: HDD (2TB) plus SSD or just HDD. I keep hearing the new formula is to install the OS on the SSD, but my question is simple - do the apps then get loaded in the HDD or do I need to load the apps in the SSD?

Specs:
Cooler Master HAF xm 922 Case
Cooler Master 850 ps
i7 3.1Ghz
Gigabyte z77 d3h (sata 3.0 enabled)
Sapphierer HD Radeon 7850 PCI Express 3.0
8 Gig 1600 RAM
Dual DVD (dime a dozen)
Soundblaster Sound

well alot will depend on what he is trying to accomplish but if i had to guess it looks like he wants mass storage and speed all at the same time, if that is the case what most people would put documents ,songs, videos on the HDD and put the O/S and games on the SSD. now if no mass storage is needed ie does not need anything more then say 250 gigs then i would just go with SSD only

aption 1 with what he has listed

typical good quality 2tb HHD $189
good quality 128gig SSD $89

totall $278

option b for just gaming only

480gig SSD starting $299

option c primarly gamming with some storage

1 tb HHD starting $64
256gig SSD starting $170

totall $234

so if he wants mass storage with some speed for the OS and a few games then option a would be best, if no mass storage and just gaming then option b and best of both option c. as for loading apps which i think he means programs he can put them where ever he wants that has room

Yar, to kind of echo what Matrix said. I had a Solid State that has my OS and games that I play the most on it. And use my other hard drives as storage for music and such.
