My current machine (on which I pwn no one and nothing) was built by some idiot (me) in 2007. I don't even remember what discount vid card I put in but I rock 18 FPS on TF2 with low settings.

Bam!
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... llFullInfo

A couple reviews I've seen:

"Overall, I am pleased, plays MW2 well, BF3, plays with a auto configuration set to; texture quality-high; then everything else auto sets to medium. Looks good."

"I had previously said that the Battlefield 3 beta ran on medium settings well. Well, I retract that and replace it with saying that it can run on ultra settings at 720p. The reason I say that is because the previous "frame rate problem" I seemed to be experiencing was actually just lag from the server. I happened to get into a close by server that wasn't very occupied and noticed an enormous difference in playability. I was able to zoom around in jets with no fear of crashing because it flew very smooth (which it needs to do if you want to seriously fly one of those things)"

"I can only play Battlefield 3 at medium settings no AA at 1280x720 for decent frame rates; 30-45."

"-Ran the Battlefield 3 beta on medium settings with high frame rate"

Your mileage may vary of course. Personally, I'm spending a bit more (~$160) for a contemporary card that will give me more peace of mind, I don't want to get in an issue where a cheaper card struggles a few months down the line and I have to go purchase another one. But hey, I'm a pansy.

Check out this list for some others that are just a little pricier: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007709%204017&IsNodeId=1&name=%24100%20-%20%24200

Since TF2 is mostly CPU-limited and you run it that slow, you might not be able to get playable performance in BF3 no matter what video card you have.

Don't know about your budget, but, don't skimp on the vid card...don't buy one under $100. The issue you will have is you are throwing good money on a card that will NOT support your gaming habit as the tech in those sub-$100 cards is usually gimped so far down that it compares to a 2 - 3 year old card. Spend a bit more and think sub $200. At that price range you will definitely be able to find something that can handle most of the game out now as well as a year (or more) into the future.

Look at this article using performances in Battlefield 3
http://www.gamefront.com/best-video-card-for-battlefield-3/

I don't know if you can go as high as $170 but that is what would get you an ATI 6870...
for ~$140 (before a $20 rebate) you can get a Radeon 6790 which has decent game performance...

...hmmmm...OK...after more digging I found this: A Radeon 6790 that is $109 after rebate ($130 before rebate) that comes with a copy of Dirt 3

Jinx / Matrix, you guys prefer the ATI stuff over Nvidia? On Newegg I see an Nvidia card priced at $170 with a good reviews: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814130571

edit: nm, looks like that 6870 you mentioned is good to go. $159 after rebate isn't bad at all.

btw, not to hijack but we're looking very similar purchases so may as well get it all in here

These days the killer is the cost of Windows 7. I can buy a prebuilt cheapo computer for $450, but i need a video card so let's call it $535. If I built I can do a lot better than that BUT then I am out $140 for an OEM of windows 7, which kills the savings...hmmm decisions.

Any thoughts on how much power supply I would need for a dual/quad core with a 6670 vid card? Would 650w be enough?

luckily, this time its worth it. win7 makes vista look like a bad dream, and I like it a lot better than all the other versions of windows I've used as well. to be perfectly honest, win7 is the first one I've paid for since win95, and I don't regret it.

win 7 oem is $99

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6832116986

as for the power supply the vide cards listed above have a 400-450 watt min req so if you went with lets say a corsair 650w you will be just fine

I agree with you completely about the OS, I've always felt that's the dilemma when building your own system. However, the price you quoted seems high, Amazon has Windows 7 Professional 64-bit for $120 w/ free shipping and no tax: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004Q0 ... B004Q0T0LU

Given the price you originally quoted, I assume you want the Professional version? If you're content with Home, you can get that for $99 at Amazon and Newegg.

I'm running a 680W Corsair power supply and I have no concern with putting the 6870 video card in there (which should be more power hungry than the 6670). I think people get in trouble when they have el cheapo power supplies, or when running dual cards with a bunch of other accessories.

Hey if you're buying most of it online, go through Fat Wallet for a cash back rebate. 3% back on Newegg, 5% at CompUsa, plus other vendors. Doesn't sound like much but it adds up, and they'll PayPal you the rebate once it's cleared. I've used them for years, bought some stuff from Overstock for my kitchen when I remodeled and netted about $40 back.

I think the biggest pro to home builds is the fact that you know exactly what you're putting in them, so it's simple to do a quick upgrade or fix if needed. The cost delta between build or buy is probably negligible on cheaper machines, and in the long run probably a little cheaper to build since you can reuse monitors, cases and power supplies.

full disclosure: my link is embedded in Amazon above

Here is the list of differences between each version of Windows 7: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/compare

Unless this is going to be your work computer or you can not read English, Home Premium is the version I'd recommend. If it is going to be your work computer as well, look to see if you really need Windows 7 Professional. As far as putting them on multiple machines all of them are for a single computer.
