I recently bought an Iomega Storcenter IX2-200 Cloud Edition NAS. It has two 1 TB drives and is configured as a RAID 1. Not entirely happy with the performance. There are a lot of things that it's supposed to do, except it can't seem to do all of them together.

Iomega just released a firmware patch that I'm hoping will fix some of the issues, and of course they recommend backing up the NAS. So now I need a backup drive for my backup array. The NAS supports external drives via USB 2.0. Ideally the drive could be left connected 24/7 and simply receive NAS backups as scheduled, but I do want to power it down when not needed. The NAS will NOT send a spin down command.

Does anyone have a suggestion for an external drive that will spin down on its own? I'm also open to other suggestions. I thought about simply putting the external drive power source on a timer, but I'm hoping for something a little more elegant.
