Okay, I used to be able to build my own computers but I am way out of the loop on what's a decent processor, etc.
Once upon a time I could build a passable desktop for about $350, including a $75 (good enough) video card (right now I am living on a Lenovo laptop that cost me $299 on sale at Frys so anything is an upgrade).
Suggestions?

Not sure how cheap you're thinking or what the horsepower needs to be, but I 'upgraded' my ancient PC for my stepson by removing the old MB and video card and replacing with a new MB w/ integrated video and a cheap processor. Seems to work more than enough for him and was less than $200 off of Newegg. I think he plays Maple a little bit and I know he does a lot of music recording and mixing on the thing.
Anyways, just a thought. Integrated video might not be so bad depending on your requirements.
EDIT: Found the receipt in my email:
MEM 1G x 2 | GSkill F2-6400CL5D $54.99
CPU AMD | Athlon II X2 245 AM3 $57.99
MB Foxconn | A74ML-K740G $44.99
Total w/ shipping and tax was $173.90, and that was a year ago.
