Okay gents, I come before humbly bowed. I have always been anti-wireless, but apparently the wife doesn't believe that having big blue cables strung across the floor is very feng shui. I've wrangled up some hardware from here and there, but am having some issues. My wireless card is a Belkin and I had found the driver/support file before cutting the cord. So I am pretty confident the issue does not lie there (as I am in fact typing this wireless-ly). The router is a Linksys GRT54GS and here is the problem. I want to secure the network with a password, but after I make any changes via the router IP, the connection to the internet is lost and I can't re-connect unless I reset the router and use an open network. I didn't think I would have to install any software for a router on my computer, but I just can not figure out how to re-connect. For example, even changing something as simple as the SSID disconnects me, and I am unable to re-connect. Thanks guys, I'll keep surfing unprotected in the mean time

Make sure you are doing the changes to the router using a wired connection, and not a wireless connection.

Thanks Blank! That was indeed the issue with it kicking me out after making a change. Being hardwired let me set up the security, but the other problem I ran into was that apparently the Belkin PCI card has issues with WPA/WPA-Pre-Shared Keys. I was trying to set it up that way as it would be easiest for any visitors to connect on their laptop/phone, but I had to go with WEP security. Turns out my Blackberry can make the distinction, but my Ipod can not, oh well. Hopefully the passphrase works in the future otherwise I will have to dig out the old hex code again. Also, If the Linksys is a new model, some have an option to copy the info of the router into an .exe onto jump drive. Then whenever anyone comes over, plug that baby in and it sets everything up for your guests laptop(s). Good luck with the router! They can be a pain at times, but you will figure it out sometimes it just takes patience... and a solution.

My wife had an old laptop that whenever I applied WEP on the router, she would lose all connection...If I went free network, she had no issues. Thankfully that laptop died and she has my 'old' one now. No issues with securing the network...I even got to lock down PORTS! 0_0
