Is there anything out there that actually competes with the ipad? I am mostly thinking for heavy travel and videos on the plane

The only tablet other than the IPAD I have heard anything good about is the Blackberry Playbook. It supports flash and can run multiple apps at the same time. But it is still very new and like everyone else cannot compete with the amount of apps available to apple yet.

I love my iPad 2 and the battery life is amazing on the thing. I have the 32 GB Wifi only model, you'll have to assess whether or not you want 3G to stream things sans Wifi. I get by ok without 3G and hope my next phone will have the ability to act as a wifi hub!

The Samsung Galaxy Tab running Android would be one of the better Android tablets out there. The HP TouchPad running WebOS is pretty good, but it suffers the same problem as the Playbook in that there is not that many apps available yet.
The best thing to do is play with all of the different tablets to get a feel for each one, as they all work a bit differently, and one operating system may be more appealing to you than another.

I know someone at work that just picked up an Android tablet (sorry - can't remember which one)... He liked it - worked the same as his phone so no learning curve really. For the apps, his opinion was that there may be fewer apps overall - but it had the ones he needed and figures that as Android gets more popular, the app pool will grow.
