Netflix says Fortnite is bigger competitor than HBO

Sat Jan 19, 2019 11:55 pm

Curiously, the company then talked up its ability to earn consumer screen time away from a "very broad set of competitors," before adding that it also competes with (and loses to) Fortnite more than HBO.

crazy how big that game has gotten.

Remember back when we all played the biggest game in the country... ya know, before we got all old and shite. :(

I play a lot of Fornite -- lots to like about it. Squad games, in particular, remind me of raiding. Time commitment is minimal (longest match I've ever been in was something like 25 minutes) and it gets tense if you survive to the end. I've got about 200 wins total in various modes.

The time commitment part certainly sounds appealing!

Its just a shooter - no grinding, no gear. Everyone regardless of playtime or experience drops onto the map with exact same thing (nothing but a pick axe). The learning curve has to do with strategy and building. You can harvest wood, brick and metal in the game and use those to build structures, ramps, walls. The people who are great builders win a lot. You can protect yourself in close quarters combat walls (everything you build is instant from when you hit the button so you can shoot at someone then build a wall and if your timing is good, their return shot hits your wall).

Being a great builder is a huge asset and takes time. But you can get into a game and have fun and do well on day 1.

Oh, and the game is free. Tons of things to spend money on in game BUT all of them are cosmetic - no game advantage to anything that can be purchased (or even those things that can be earned through game play). 100% level playing field in terms of items.

I tried it for like 5 minutes and the controls were all screwy, my stoner mind couldn't process it. World seemed big and I think I dropped in on a parachute which I count as a plus.

Ecterris and I have been playing the Call of Duty version of this (Blackout). It's great.

Sits in a sweet spot between Fortnite and PUBG. No building, which is OK, because I sucked at it, but you have to buy the game to play, which is an obvious negative compared to Fortnite.
