I'll be waiting to see where this is between BF2 and BFBC2 before I decide. I believe they were initially saying that it would be more BF2 then BC2 but BC2 did pretty well. I'm hoping they bring it back to a more BF2 style game.
I know everyone hated it, but man I really miss BF2142 non-titan multiplayer. I had so much fun with that game. 32v32 sprawling foot-traffic maps is where its at (sorry I hate flying vehicles, speedy jeeps for squads are fun tho). Sucks that there is no commander mode, I thought that was inspired.

Although I eventually sold my copy of BF2 and the first expansion, that first expansion was amazing. It introduced a lot of smaller, tighter maps, with jeeps being the only vehicle, and it was much more fun than the big maps with helis, jets, and artillery. I did enjoy the big stuff from time to time, but the close quarters stuff is way better.
I just realized I won't even be near my computer when Brink launches May 9. Now I am sad.

Completely agree, jeeps are great purely for logistical purposes, as it assists squad cohesion and allows sneak attacks and other fun tactics. Kinda boring to get randomly pelted by huge aircraft of be forced to use tanks to actually find other players in a map.
Nah, after 100 hours of BF2 in a very short amount of time, I was done. Sold it off and the first expansion pack, back before the days of Steam and multiplayer games were easily resellable.
It was a fun game, but I fear that BF3 will have the same issue BF2 ended up having for me, which was that it was a loosely connected sum of parts. Every round was a mad race for who could get into the jets or helis first. If this was the aircraft carrier, the remaining losers would have to take boats to the shore, then nab a jeep. It was this same basic disregard for creating a cohesive structure that pushed me away. You could basically just troll the real players while zipping around in a jet. Cap flags? Nah, just carpet bomb. Take out the artillery cannons? Nope, just carpet bomb everyone.
BF3 seems like it'll have more vehicles, but I doubt any large maps will be safe from jet soloing monkey pilots.
I have BF:BC2 but I never played it. Was a steam gift I didn't get around to caring about. Also have BF 1943 on XBLA. Worst $15 spent, as I played less than 45 minutes before I was incredibly bored.

I never actually played BF2, I went straight into PR. I never really noticed the things you mentioned. Everything was actually very cohesive as there was a definite chain of command with orders flowing down to the squad level. Each squad leader deals with the commander for transport and build requests, and each player must belong to a squad or else not have access to squad-enabled weapons and forward spawn points. If I recall correctly, lone wolfs were also not allowed to drive vehicles because they could not acquire the driver/pilot kits necessary.
The jets and helis, as I understand, are also more difficult to pilot. But having nevered played BF2, I can't personally compare.
